Dear Euvie,
Iâm so sorry to hear about the Laundromat!!! Seems like yâall just barely got it up and running. We all thought it was such a good idea, a Laundromat in a college town. I will admit, Iâm not surprised Hugh and laundry werenât a good match. I hope you wonât take offense, me saying that. But you did marry a dreamer. Half the time Iâm so jealous of your life, the other half Iâm thanking my lucky stars for my predictable tomato farmer. (Who says hello, by the way.)
Howâs it going to work out, the lease on your allâs home being up before you can move into the new one? Knowing you and Hugh, youâll turn it into some grand adventure for the girls. I worry, though. Alice is so persnickety! Do you need money? If so, just ask. Iâve been putting some aside for a rainy day. (Donât tell Frank. Heâd want to put the money toward the new barn heâs building. Why he thinks he needs another barn, I do not know, but heâs set on it. Last year it was his pout house; this year, a new barn. The man just loves to build.)
Also, and this is hush-hush, Mama says sheâs gonna sign some of her oil checks over to you and me. Wonât Daddy have a fit?! But like she says, the money is hers to do with what she wants. So keep your fingers crossed she goes through with it. Sheâs getting a bit forgetful. Iâm worried about her. She forgot Frankâs name the other day. Can you believe? Just plumb slipped from her mind. Doc says to make sure sheâs not taking too many sleeping pills, so I counted them out and check every day. Thatâs not the problem. Anyway, Iâll do my best to help her remember about the checks. I know we could all use a little extra.
Big news around here is the Conways left the church to follow a new fellow thatâs starting to preach out at the Grange Hall. I guess theyâre really eager to get to heaven and donât think our Pastor Peters is the man to get them there. Not that I blame them. Last Sunday, it was everything I could do to keep from nodding off as he went on and on about âtaking up the whole armor of God.â I tell you, that man is so boring he could put the sun to sleep.
What do you all think of Senator McCarthyâs list of communists? You know me, I donât pay much attention to politics, but the fact that we could be living next door to a communist scares the heck out of me. Frank says no communist in his right might would be living in East Texas, that theyâre all in New York and California. Be careful!!!!! I miss you something awful.
Your loving and predictable sister,
Evokia
PS. Please tell Lucy I loved the birthday card and the enclosed short story. Very ingenious!
